Lucas: "Hey Dad, it's your birthday today. And this year, I was kinda tossing up what to get you.
I feel like, much like myself you're kind of a guy where if you want something and it's affordable, you just go out and get it.
How do you shop for a man like that?
A gift card for Bunnings can only suffice for so many years.
Art is something that's really important to you, and that's not only rubbed off onto me, but it's kind of fundamentally shaped who I am as a person.
It brings me such great joy to see that you've been able to take what you love most in the world, your passion for pottery, and turn it into something
that's full time.
You know, you've kind of crafted your dream job out of it. And I just find that to be the most inspiring thing in the world.
The inspiration and the guidance that you provided me led to my passion for creating as a child through into my adult years.
And well, pottery was...
Pottery was never really my thing.
I hope that you can see how your love of the craft and sharpening the saw and being creative has applied to so many of the things that I ended up doing.
Considering you used to be a teacher, it makes sense that you could successfully teach that to me.
You and Mum worked so hard to provide me everything that I needed to be a creative kid.
Provided me the opportunity to explore what I wanted to explore whether that was notebooks and pens and cameras and computers; whatever I was interested in you were able to provide for me and it shaped who I am.
However, right now there's a lot of kids out there, a lot of Kiwi kids, thousands of Kiwi kids out there that will never get the same opportunities that I had as a kid that you provided for me.
There's a lot of families out there that are tossing up between being able to send their kid to school with the entire stationery list or sending their kid to school with lunch every day.
And that's the reality of the situation.
Families just can't afford everything.
And that's not even including the schools that are including computers or tablets in the stationery list, because they're essential to the classes. And those are really expensive purchases.
I would be a fundamentally different person if I didn't have the opportunities presented to me as a kid that I did.
And so it's heartbreaking that there are a lot of kids out there that are just never going to get that.
So with all that said, that's why I'm making this video, I kind of want to see if we can make a small difference to that.
Available for preorder right now and then shipping later next month,
I've created and then paid for a small number of visual diaries, which are perfect, they’re nice and thick, they’re perfect for painting and writing and drawing and noting in.
And the best part is all the profits from this are gonna go to those kids that I was talking about.
It's going to go directly to the schools that need it the most, to subsidize the cost of the stationery lists, the art supplies and the things they really need to get a good full education in school, including things like art classes.
I've named it after you, and kind of our, wacky family.
So anyone right now can go to thehakkaarts.co.nz and order one.
I wish I had a visual diary to hold up and show you right now, obviously they’re still off getting manufactured.
They’re 200GSM, A5, 120 pages and hopefully every time someone buys one of these notebooks, one of these visual diaries, we’ll also be able to provide a notebook, and more, to a kid who really needs it.
Now, I won't lie, it's going to be a lot of work to get all of these sold, but it's work I'm more than happy to do as a way of honoring you Dad and, more importantly, giving back, because it's really an incredible life that you've been able to give me.
So, yeah.
Happy birthday.
I hope you like it."
